COVID-19 Clinical Research Coordination Initiative Newsletter – August Update

News and Announcements:

Tackling the Science Behind the Long-Term Effects of COVID-19
Researchers at the University of British Columbia (UBC) are investigating the long-term impacts of COVID-19. This research aims to understand and improve lives for patients struggling with lingering symptoms of COVID-19. For more details, please visit med.ubc.ca.

Researchers Launch Study Into COVID-19 Vaccine Uptake and Efficacy in Vulnerable Urban Populations
Fatal drug poisonings have increased across BC and Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic. Researchers at the BC Centre on Subtance Use (BCCSU) are investigating the uptake, effectiveness, and safety of COVID-19 vaccines among members of vulnerable urban populations, including people who use unregulated drugs. For more details, please visit med.ubc.ca.

New Study to Assess COVID-19 Vaccine Effectiveness Among People Living with HIV
The Canadian HIV Trials Network (CTN) is conducting a national study to assess the immune responses, safety, and effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccination among people living with HIV. The study will focus on the most vulnerable older patients living with HIV to help inform vaccination guidelines. For more details, please visit med.ubc.ca.

New Study to Monitor COVID-19 Illness and Vaccine Safety, Effectiveness in Children and Youth in Canada
A pan-Canadian study is monitoring the effects of illness from COVID-19 among children and youth, as well as the safety and effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines. The study conducted by Canada’s Immunization Monitoring Program ACTive (IMPACT) network will complement safety monitoring by the Public Health Agency of Canada, Health Canada, and other organizations. For more details, please visit med.ubc.ca.

Funding Opportunities:

CIHR Operating Grant: COVID-19 Vaccine Confidence
This opportunity will support research informing effective strategies to improve COVID-19 vaccine confidence and uptake among populations experiencing systemic inequities, conditions of marginalization, including Indigenous Peoples and populations who are historically under-vaccinated. The maximum amount per grant is $100,000 per year, for up to two years.

Application deadline: August 10, 2021For more details, please visit ResearchNet.

CIHR Operating Grant: Emerging COVID-19 Research Gaps and Priorities
This opportunity will provide rapid funding for projects that respond to identified gaps in COVID-19 research areas. The maximum amount per grant for a clinical trial or a randomized control trial is $1,000,000 over one year. The maximum amount per grant for all other types of research is $500,000 over one year.

Registration Deadline: August 10, 2021

Application Deadline: September 14, 2021For more details, please visit ResearchNet.

New Frontiers in Research Fund: 2021 Innovative Approaches to Research in the Pandemic Context
The goal of this rapid response call is to accelerate the exploration of new approaches and the development and testing of new directions in research methodologies. It is expected that this call will predominantly support new ways of conducting community and field-based research, since the pandemic has had the greatest impact on researchers’ ability to collect data and conduct this type of research. The maximum budget for the direct costs of the research project is $200,000 for one year.

Notice of Intent Deadline: September 21, 2021

Application Deadline: October 26, 2021For more details, please visit sshrc-crsh.gc.ca.

Resources for Investigators:

Connect with the Public through REACH BC
REACH BC enables researchers to connect with potential study participants and patient partners within a broad population across BC – in urban and rural settings, across multiple health authorities. This platform matches interested volunteers with researchers, who can review and select as participants in their studies. For more information, please visit reachbc.ca.

COVID-19 Patient Database for Research
The COVID-19 Consent to Contact Registry Database (CCRD) is a means for researchers to connect with British Columbians who have experienced COVID-19, and contribute to improving care for COVID-19 patients. Access to the registry is organized by the COVID-19 Clinical Research Coordination Initiative (CRCI). Researchers interested in accessing the registry must first submit their request through the CRCI Request FormFor more information, please visit bccdc.ca and crci.med.ubc.ca.
